I know this book wasn't written by Hayao Miyazaki but Tsugiko Kubo did an amazing job at writing this book. My Neighbor Totoro is a classic animated film that cemented Studio Ghibli’s legendary status as a premier animation studio. Satsuki, Mei and Tatsuo (their father) moved to a country side to get closer to the girls' mother, Yasuko, who'd been in a sanatorium due to an illness for a year. It's the story of Two girls who (with their father) move house and meet a forest spirit and his friends who help them in their time of need.

Totoro also serves as the mascot for Studio Ghibli and is recognized as one of the most popular characters in Japanese animation. It had previously been released as an Image Song CD in 1987 that contains some songs that were not included in the film. The film's central character Totoro was used as a mascot by the Japanese campaign "Totoro Hometown Fund Campaign", which aimed to preserve areas of satoyama in Saitama Prefecture. Only one young girl, rather than two sisters, is depicted in several of Miyazaki's initial conceptual watercolor paintings, as well as on the theatrical release poster and on later home-video releases. Soon, Satsuki and Mei discover Totoro, a magical forest spirit who takes them on fantastic adventures through the trees and the clouds - and teaches them a lesson about trusting one another. For instance, unlike the film, Satsuki, the first born, was comparatively older and more mature in the book than in the film. To be fair, I haven’t watched it in nearly a decade so I could be remembering things wrong, but I was a bit disappointed in the lack of Totoro in these pages. However, complaints aside, more mature readers should be able to identify almost immediately the artsy and grandiloquent writing chops harnessed and displayed here sufficiently by Mrs. Thirty years after its original release in Japan, My Neighbor Totoro received a Chinese theatrical release in December 2018. These pictures are there, serving as a sort of anchor, to keep the fantasy and adventure very much grounded and alive inside the little readers' curious minds. It follows the source material, from which it's derived, quite faithfully, albeit a few minor tweaks may be discovered here and there throughout the tale.
